Report # 29633  (Class B)
Submitted by witness on Friday, June 24, 2011.
Late afternoon encounter by hunters scouting for deer between Cadillac and Manton

YEAR: 2010

SEASON: Summer

MONTH: July

STATE: Michigan

COUNTY: Wexford County

LOCATION DETAILS: East of 131 between Cadillac and Manton.

NEAREST TOWN: Manton

NEAREST ROAD: 131

OBSERVED: I was in Wexford county between Cadillac and Manton in the long lake state forest with a few friends. We were back in the woods a way by a creek. Just talking and scouting for deer season. I was throwing stones into the ceder swamp on the other side of the stream when we heard a low growl sound. The next think i saw was a shadow moving though the edge of the swamp. Not a clear visual but i know it was standing up right and walking. Then rocks started flying back up in our direction. We found it amusing so we threw a few more back into the swamp. Then we heard the growl again and branches start breaking. We turned and ran as fast as we could back to the Jeep and got out of there.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: around 6 pm.

ENVIRONMENT: ceder swamp next to a stream.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Don Peer:

I spoke with the witness by phone about the experience.

He stated that he was scouting for a good place to deer hunt with a couple of friends. It was a place where he had gone before and found plenty of signs of deer. They were standing on top of a ridge with a creek below, and a cedar swamp below that. They heard a loud growl and were mystified as to what made it as they had never heard a growl like it before. He picked up a few small rocks and threw them into the swamp towards the noise to see the reaction of whatever was down there.

One of the witness' friends thought he could see something large and dark moving at the edge of the swamp. The witness thought he saw a dark, shadowlike, upright thing moving as well, but isn't as sure. A few minutes later some rocks were thrown back toward them, one of which was quite large. Shortly thereafter, more growls were heard as well as large sticks and branches being broken. At this point, the three were quite unnerved and left, even though they were all carrying side arms.

He stated that he has not been back there since and that he's experienced other strange instances when at that location before that made him uncomfortable. I asked him to take me to the location if he gets in the area and he said he would. If I find anything while scouting the location I will revise this report at that time.

It would take hands to throw the rocks. That combined with the loud growls and branch breaking are classic sasquatch behavior which seems to have been aimed at making the hunters leave and it succeeded.

The surrounding area is part of the Pere Marquette State Forest and abounds with wildlife. It has thick hardwood forests, swamps and many creeks and small lakes throughout. It would provide ample food, water and cover for sasquatch.
